In theory, it will detect if the fob is inside the car vs outside, but these systems are not that precise and get it wrong sometimes. Every once in a while I do want to start the car and let it warm up before getting underway while still having it locked. The only vehicle I owned that auto locked was the PT Cruiser. This was the main reason why many brands created apps to work as fobs. However, it won't spare you from running out of battery or losing the fob.
