I like Seven Seas because it works for every kind of civ. For the exploration side of the game, I like maps like Continents and islands, Archipelago, Island Plates or Small Continents where you discover the map with naval units, following the coasts. An other map I play often is Inland Sea.

Lakes have a TON of settling room (there are “oceans” they are just lake-sized). I’m playing a small game in which I should’ve added another AI or two because it’s nearly turn 250 and there is a ton of good ground to still settle.
